We’ve mentioned about research in general and specifically research into you.
The next most important research that must be done is product research.
If your attempt to build an online internet marketing business is simply an exercise to learn the mechanics of putting up a website, drafting a sales letter and getting a taste of the operation of an auto responder, then you can skip doing any product research.
There are two basic situations: One, you are already in business and you want to enhance that business via online internet marketing; Two, you are not in business and you want to be in business.
The second situation further breaks down as follows: 1. You will sell goods; 2. you will sell services.
The first question then is why are you looking at internet marketing?
Here is where research comes in. If your approach is that internet marketing is simply another form of media, you should stop right there. Although the internet is a form of media, it is very different from radio, TV, newspapers and direct mail.
The online internet marketing can be in the form of a web site that is nothing more than an online billboard. It is simply “out there”, and, like a billboard, you hope that people see your message.




I’m reviewing with you the way I got started. Although this blog is a little bit our of order, it’s not too far off.
Maybe like you I found the internet marketing business intriguing. So what did I do? I started focusing on the mechanics of the business.
Ever heard of anybody doing this? The first thing they do with a new business is buy business cards?
Here’s what I think you should do. Maybe you’ll agree.
It’s going to be a little touchy-feely but stay with me here.
Before you buy another internet marketing system, take some time, go off by yourself or with your partner, and think about, visualize, fantasize…whatever works for you, and RESEARCH you.
Now this may sound a little or a lot weird or pie in the sky, but it’s really back to the well documented “begin with the end in mind”.
Picture yourself where you want to be after your online internet marketing business is up, going and successful.
This exercise is worth spending some time on and hopefully it will be fun. Cut loose in your mind! Dream, fantasize or visualize big!




This blog rambles a bit because it’s from my notes and disjointed journaling, so please bear with me if I jump back and forth in time.
I think that if you follow this blog very long you’ll realize fairly soon that I have come to love the unlovable. I have come to love research. I admit that in some of my former lives research was not the thing that I first thought of when considering fun things.
And it may be too strong to say that I love research. I just have found that research is very good at avoiding pain. Avoiding pain’s a good thing.
Although I’ve been around a while, I admit that as I began to look into the online internet marketing business, it was entranced by the prospect of many hundreds, even thousand of dollars a day in my own business.
The online internet marketing business seemed to have many advantages that made it look like the perfect opportunity:
It has relatively low cost of entry, it generally has no requirements of inventory, one can have few or no employees, it requires little in the way of ongoing capital infusions, it has a world wide market that is growing daily, and it can be operated from anywhere in the world that has electricity at least some of the time. All of these factors make it so that the big well capitalized competitor has less advantage over the individual entrepreneur than in most any other business. Thus, it is an attractive business for individuals.
Those whose business it is to put other people into the online internet marketing business start with these base facts, but…usually two propositions are added: one: a successful internet marketing business is yours quickly; two: as little as ten dollars, but usually less than one hundred dollars is all the investment you’ll need.




I’ve found that one of the biggest pitfalls or obstacles to success in Internet Marketing as a business is that many neophytes approach the business as something other than a business.
There’s plenty of literature out there in the form of web pages that focus on a dream. The dream might be “your own business”, “fire your boss”, “executive income from home” and many more.
This is not to say that a “dream” is not important. It is important, although in typical business-speak, a “dreamer” is called a “visionary”. Call it what you like the vision or the dream is very important as a motivator or as the impetus to start the search for a successful business.
Here’s the catch. Although the dream or vision can be the spark that leads to a successful new business, a new business cannot be successfully started while you are dreaming. The new business person must be awake.
The key to approaching a new internet marketing business while awake, not while dreaming, is approaching the internet market business as a business.
Sounds reasonable, yes?
Another but: Many of the internet marketing business pitches I saw (see) focused almost entirely on tools or mechanics. What I mean by this is that most internet marketing packages teach the new entrant into the business. how to operate the tools that the promoter is selling. Or to say it another way, the fairly typical promotion boils down to accepting the proposition that if these three or five or ten key secret steps or tools are followed or used, the new business will be a success.
And it might be.
But tools don’t make a business. A individual seeking to start a restaurant may have all the ranges, ovens, serving dishes, flatware, etc. that the most successful restaurant has, and be a complete business failure in the matter of months.
Exceptions are always possible because of raw talent or luck, but usually an internet marketing business requires that the same steps be followed as would be followed in a more traditional business.
